Dear Apex Staff and Penticton Hamlets Management, I wanted to share this message that I put on Facebook and sent to family friends after our mom, Mary Cormack’s passing on March 18, 2014. Mom’s family is so grateful for the concern and support given to her and to our family, for the past five years and at the time of our loss. My husband Bryan and I have gone on a holiday to rest and restore, and spend much time reminiscing about mom and her wonderful life. I shall come visit upon my return,

With Sincere Thanks, Jane Snider

My mother Mary, had many different chapters in her life: her youth in Ontario, her marriage and time of raising a family in Prince George, her retirement years with my dad and relocating to Penticton at age sixty-five.

Her latest chapter involved dementia and living in a wheelchair, both polar opposites for a woman who treasured long daily walks and her encyclopedias within an arm’s length as she loved history, language and the arts. This last chapter also meant leaving her home and going into care as well as losing my dad.

Throughout this past five years, mom created a new world and reality for herself. Her immediate society was one of elders like herself, and the staff of her retirement home, the Hamlets. These people, ultimately, were her new family and she shared every day with them.

Upon passing, we realized to what depth mom had still influenced people with her sense of humour, gratitude for her caregivers, graciousness and charm. During her last days, a parade of her Hamlet family passed through her room with the most wonderful stories and messages for those sitting bedside with mom. They all had the same theme, mom had made a difference in their world, she was someone they looked forward to seeing each day, and they would miss her.

So while mom’s last years were diminished physically and mentally, she managed to  adapt to her new home, live in the present, and contribute to the world in her own special way, and we are grateful to recognize this .
